Lost Wave Music

The Frozen Nile play lost wave music, a fusion of laptop technology with fuzzed guitars and deviant sax that draws on a whole range of influences from the last thirty odd years of leftfield music, from krautrock, New York minimalism, drones and soundscapes to trance rock with punk pop overtones.

The first incarnation of The Frozen Nile were formed in February 2004 by three members of the space rock improv collective Klangstorm. Viv Jones plays a variety of saxaphones, including a digital wind synth. He also sings and is frequently prone to beating scrap metal with an almost religious fervour. Phil Cervi, who describes himself as a dedicated non musician, plays analogue synth and constructs and controls the bands ryhthm sections using a variety of computer software which he manipulates in real time for live performances. He also shares responsiblilty for the band's surreal and subversive song lyrics with Jones.

Regular guitarist in the core trio was Barry Naylor who provides a perfect counterbalance to the avant tendencies of his two other Klangstorm compatriots. He is the source of the hooks, tunes and textures that are very much the identity of The Frozen Nile sound.

The fourth member, albeit on a more part time basis, was Robert Cartwright, who is really black country R&B guitar legend Rob Cartwright of Three Blind Mice, but we have called him by his more formal full name here to avoid confusion and contractual difficulties!. Robert plays exceedingly tasty licks and adds an extra dimension to the band's more rock and funk moments.

The Frozen Nile were also joined on occassions for live performances by drummer Adrian Holmes, but his appearances were limited by his touring commitments as Drum Tech with Porcupine Tree.

Increasing commitments in other areas brough the original line up to a standstill in 2006. In early 2007, however, Phil Cervi met Dave Mitson whilst both were taking part in artist Paul Gittins' multi media show, Shadow Dances. Dave had just retuned to the UK after living in the USA for 25 years, during which time he spent many years as Sony's chief mastering engineer. Whilst none of the other members have actually "left" the band, The Frozen Nile are now operating as a three piece, though the full expanded line up do plan to play together again some time in the future. Current line up is:

Phil Cervi: Sequences, Guitar, Synthesizer, (very occasional!) Vocals, Sequence Programming.

Viv Jones: Vocals, Saxophone, Wind Synth, Percussion

Dave Mitson: Guitars & Bass.
